About

Erland Howden by Brad HunterHi, I’m Erland. I’m a professional photographer, designer, sustainability consultant and open-source software expert. I usually work in Sydney, Australia, but in 2009 I’m travelling in Europe doing photography and environmental work. On this blog, you’ll read about my sustainable travels, environmental news and opinion, design and photography besides generally what I’m up to. You can also visit my portfolio web site at ErlandHowden.com or buy greeting cards, framed, canvas and laminated prints and posters of my work here.

Photography & Design

I do commissioned photography and design as well as event photography and can travel – use the contact form to get in touch with me or book a poster design here. My passion is nature photography – wilderness, landscape, flowers, animals and macro – but I’m also accomplished at portrait, weddings, product, commercial and photojournalism. I love travelling the world as you will see from this  blog and draw inspiration from the incredible bio- and cultural diversity on this planet. Through my work as a professional climate change campaigner, I have a lot of experience in designing campaign, merchandise and marketing materials.

More about me

My previous job was working as a climate change campaigner for the Nature Conservation Council of NSW including developing the ClimateMovement.org.au web site. Back in Sydney, I live on a voluntary wildlife refuge, use solar power, rainwater tanks and other sustainability measures. I believe in and work for a non-violent, sustainable, equitable and just future in everything that I do. I also just started the Sustainable Places Australia website, which has a profile of my home, Glenorie Wildlife Refuge on it.

In 2002 I did a short course in digital video production at the Australian Film, Television & Radio School, Macquarie University. In 2003 I had photos and video published by Reportage (Australian Centre for Independent Journalism), then produced 2 short films. I was the photographer for the Sydney City circular “The City News” for a year and a half, as well as being finalist in two prestigious photographic competitions and working as a freelance event photographer for Willoughby City Council and other private clients. I have also been doing freelance design work and have been selling prints of my photographs and designs for a few years.

I am also an expert in open-source software solutions and have done a range of freelance web design projects, as well as managing an online community at ClimateMovement.org.au.
